Story
Rosina leaves Italy to build a better life. But after joining her brother and his shrewish wife in America, Rosina finds disappointment and disillusionment. She never expects to find love in this place – until she meets a shoemaker’s apprentice named Gianni.
When Rosina becomes ill and is hospitalized, their future is at stake. All they have is their shared letters. Each week she tries to survive the long, lonely days until Gianni’s next Sunday visit.
Will fate bring Rosina and Gianni together once more? Or are they destined to remain star-crossed forever?
Setting
Set mostly in 1921 Pennsylvania, this book recreates a romance between two Italian immigrants, Rosina and Gianni, via their shared correspondence. Much of the correspondence is exchanged during Rosina’s hospitalization for a mysterious illness that’s never fully explained. This is followed by a lengthy stay in a Pennsylvania sanatorium. She’s stuck here after being released from the hospital because her prior living arrangements went up in smoke due to a vindicative sister-in-law.
The letters are sweet and romantic. They’re also redundant and only mildly interesting, saying pretty much the same thing over and over in between narration by Rosina. Included are endless discussions about Rosie’s health – yawn – and “write immediately!” “a million kisses,” and so on. There’s also a lot of Drama Queen 101 going on. Zzzzzzzz.
I really wanted to like this book. But it’s not exactly a barn burner. I also ran out of toothpicks trying to prop my eyes open.
The story has potential. It’s sweet and mellow and has a certain “days gone by” kind of charm. Whether or not it will resonate with a broad audience is open to question. We will not be rating this book.
