The Basics

Cheryl Calloway is in a seasonal slump. Recently divorced, the last thing she needs is for her chain-smoking, Vodka-drinking, wise-cracking Mama to move in with her. But move in Mama does, along with Nigel, a loquacious Amazonian parrot who’s “the love of Mama’s life.”

Settling the gregarious, geriatric Mama into Cheryl’s tiny cottage is like trying to “settle” a runaway freight train. Mama may be elderly, but she’s still a force of nature.

Wild Rose Lane will never be the same.

In the meantime, Cheryl has a full plate. She’s trying to clean up her porch for the upcoming Christmas parade. Doing battle with her estranged siblings. Getting her booth ready for the upcoming Christmas Open House. And then there’s her curmudgeonly neighbor, Alice. This lady makes Scrooge look like Captain Smiley. Not to mention Miriam, the vixen who married Cheryl’s ex. Adding insult to injury, the newlyweds live right across the street.   

How could the holidays possibly get any worse?

But wait. Nigel is bird-napped just before Christmas! The mad dash to retrieve the bird and find out who did the dastardly deed turns into a light-hearted romp through a sweltering December in the small town of Sweet Water, Georgia. And more.

About the Author

Barbara Barth turned to writing and adopting dogs to heal after her husband died fourteen years ago. Known as ‘Writer With Dogs’, Barth currently lives with four Chihuahuas in a charming town forty miles outside of Atlanta.

She is Literary Arts Chair at a small art center where she promotes writing activities, author events, book launches, and hosts an online group, Walton Writers.
