Me, Boo and the Goob: A Southern Adventure

By William M. Garner

Fiction/Humor

You know how you’re drinking a soft drink and then start laughing so hard, you snort Sprite out your nose?

“Don’t look at me,“ says Kimber. (Insert eye roll here.) “I don’t do Sprite.”

Mom doesn’t really do Spite either. But if she did, that’s exactly what would’ve happened when we read this book. We laughed so hard, we cried! (Maybe even snorted. A little.)

Rimming with wry wit and dry humor, this is the story of three young boys growing up in a small town near Memphis in the 1960s. Adventures and misadventures abound as they try to navigate the adult world with the best of intentions.

(Kinda like me!  As in, if you don’t tell Mom about the missing New York steak, I won’t tell her about… well… how was I supposed to know that nice, juicy steak was headed to the backyard grill? Sitting there on the table unguarded, it looked like fair game to me! Football anyone?)

‘Sampler Platter’ from Me, Boo & the Goob:

  • “He wasn’t hurt until we tried to save him.”
  • “Just remember the immoral words of Sir Walter Raleigh, ‘We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.’”
  • “Bullets will bounce off of me.”
  • “We were going pretty fast when we hit the tree.”

Also Miss Black’s School for Boys. Communist “gorillas.” Upside-down underground rocket engines. “Charley Davidson” motorcycles. “Sliding rail races.” The golf course. The Great Ghost Hunt.

Hilarious & Heartwarming

A lightning-fast read with chapters that flow into the next like Peach Brandy out of a bootlegger’s bottle, this story is both hilarious and heartwarming. It harkens back to simpler times and a slower pace. It’s told in the first person from Willie’s (?) point of view, with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

It grabbed us from page 1 of the Introduction – one of the funniest we’ve ever read – and didn’t let go until the final page.

In One Sitting

Mom says, “I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard reading a book. Me, Boo and the Goob is knee-slappin’, funny-bone tickling, laugh-out-loudin’, Spite-snortin’ hilarious! We read it cover-to-cover in one sitting.”

If you need a pick-me-up, a good laugh, sunshine on a cloudy day, or just a few moments to unwind and enjoy a quick trip through yesteryear, this one’s for you.
