Hey buddy and buddy-ette!
Can you spare five minutes? Good. Cuz that’s about all the time I’ve got on this Reading Goods thing. Ya see, Mom has her I’m Reading: Do Not Interrupt on Pain of Death face on. You know. With those eye glass do-dads and a furrowed brow. (No idea what that means. If you do, kindly holler.) So I gotta get this in like, pronto!
Squirrel!
Wait. Where was I?
Oh yeah. Reading Goods. You may know it as Goodreads. But let’s not get picky here, Buttercup.
What It Is
Her Momness says this Reading Goods thing is a humungous social cataloging site for readers and book recommendations. It’s a place to meet other book lovers and authors. Read reviews. Discover new books. Get more out of reading. Be floored by some of the overcooked kale that gets rave reviews. (Look, Sweet Pea. We have standards here, okay?) And where to get the best sale on bacon. Or peanut butter!
What?
Well, okay. Maybe not bacon or PB sales. But I hear there are some yummy things you can do on this site. Like:
Four Things You Can Do On Goodreads:
- See what books your friends are reading.
- Track the books you’re reading, have read, and want to read.
- Check out personalized book recommendations.
- Find out if a book is a good fit for you from community reviews.
Anyhow, since I’m kind of a pup at this Reading Goods thing, I thought maybe one or two of you might be, too. So here’s what I learned about how to get the most out of this place (if you already know this, maybe you can chime in with some tips of your own. Or follow She Who Must Be Obeyed there, too.)
- Create an account. It’s free. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to do that. Complete your profile by adding a pic, a bio, etc. That helps other hoomans find you.
- Add books to your shelf. Here’s how you do that. It’s quick and easy. Even Her Momness the Brontosaur figured it out. (Don’t tell her I said that, okay?)
- Adding books takes a few minutes. You don’t need to write a full review or do a rating. Just add the book to your ‘Want to Read’ shelf. Then readers will know your interests.
Why Add books to Reading Goods?
Glad you asked! I was kinda wondering that myself. Here are three reasons to add books to Reading Goods:
- Adding books generates a newsfeed update to your followers. It’s a quick, easy way to stay visible. (Even Brontosauruses can do this!)
- Adding books gives you credibility. Every author started as a reader. Give new readers a better understanding of where you came from by sharing what you enjoy.
- Adding books gives you conversation material. When readers comment on a book review you wrote, it’s absolutely ok to respond. Remember though: everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
One other thing, Toots. Some people say ya gotta add new books constantly to “show you’re up with the times.” Like we care. Once your Reading Goods is up and running, just add what you went, when you want. Like us Brontosaurs. Wait. Was that a Triceratops?
You can find us on Goodreads here. Kindly BYO bacon. And peanut butter.

Love the photo of Mom reading as a little one! The Best! Brilliant as a baby!
I am on Goodreads for both my books – Trip Tales: From Family Camping to Life as a Ranger, and Tales From a Rogue Ranger.
Thanks much for the tips on Goodreads, Kimber and Mom!

Found ya and followed on GR! As for that picture of Her Momness. She’s about a year old. Mouth open as always. 😊

Thank you for explaining the black hole that is Goodreads. I’m a smart guy and I never understood how to find potential value there. You and Kimber may have switched on a light. I read all of your wonderful blogs but I have not been diligent in responding. I can do better than that. I often hide in my shell and it’s cost me at times. Keep up the good work and God bless.
