11 Cozy Reads for Cold Winter Days

What?

So Her Crankiness is grumping about this thing called “winter.” Seems Mom’s kinda tired of the thing. She keeps saying stuff like, “Cold. Gray. Pouring rain. Dark too early. Let’s move to Miami!”

No clue what that means. But I thought today would be a good day to warm up some cozy reading suggestions. So I got my Thinking Cap on and came up with the following. (Okay, okay. Mom helped. A little. But it was mostly me.)

These cozy winter reading suggestions include books that are either set during winter or there’s plenty of snow and cold in the pages. So grab a hot cuppa, a warm blanket and find your next great winter read (Yes, we’ve read all of these):

XMAS BOOK BASH #3: Evans Twofer

1. If Only

By Richard Paul Evans (2015)

Genre: Fiction – Christmas/Young Adult

Pages: 288 (paperback)

Via: Library

Mom’s in her kerchief and I’m in my cap. We’ve just settled down for a long winter’s nap.  We’re waiting for some dude to show up. He has a little round belly that shakes when he laughs like a bowlful of jelly.

No idea what that means. But if Mom likes it, then so do I.

Anywho, we’re talking about Christmas books today. And one of our favorite authors popped up. Richard Paul Evans reigns supreme as “the King of the Christmas novel.” Evans perches high on our Favorite Authors List. We’ve read just about every title he’s ever written. And Evans is a prolific writer, if ya know what I mean. Mom’s been reading his books ever since 2003, when she nabbed the Evans book that started it all: The Christmas Box. It’s a perennial fave. And if you haven’t read it, you should. Cuz it’s really really good. (Mom re-reads it every holiday season. Since 2003. That must be some kind of a record. And yes, she has it pretty much memorized.)

Blue Plate Special

Anyway, today we’re bringing you an Honest to Goodness, Tail-Waggin’, Bow-wowin’, Bark-worthy Mom and Kimber Blue Plate Special. Also known as a “Richard Paul Evans Twofer.”

First, we recently re-read an Evans Christmassy novel called If Only. One of us didn’t realize we’d already read it until she was about halfway in. But you know Mom. (It was previously published as Grace. That’s what threw us off. So there!)

Anyway again, If Only isn’t Evans’ typical Christmas novel. Those usually center around love found. Love lost. Hopes dashed. Lives ruined. But then…. Redemption. Rescue. Love rediscovered. Forgiveness. Grace. Strong undercurrents of faith, hope, and love swirl throughout the typical Evans Christmas novel. And although there’s All of the Above in If Only, it marks a dramatic departure from Evans’ typical Christmas fare.

That’s cuz If Only touches on a difficult topic: child abuse. Not exactly the stuff that makes for chestnuts roasting on an open fire or Jack Frost nipping at your nose. But Evans’ handling of the topic is so sensitive and poignant and understated, he pulls it off. One powerful page after another. Like this:

15 Forgotten Christmas Movies Worth Watching

‘Tis the season, folks! For merry-making. Decking the halls. Fa-la-la-la-laing. Snuggling up with a hot cuppa. Plopping in a peppermint stick. Curling up with a Christmas-themed fave or binge-watching some good ‘ole Christmas movies.

‘You gonna eat that?’

Mom and I were gonna do our version of Best Christmas Movies Ever today. You know. George Bailey and Bedford Falls. Pine Tree Inn, Vermont and lots of snow. The Grinch. Then we thought about some “lost,” lesser-known Christmas movies worth watching. Made a list. Checked it twice.

Here ’tis (in no particular order):

A Tribute & The Morning

Her Momness and I love Christmas! If Christmas was a dessert, we’d eat it up with a spoon! The decorating! The music! The lights! The tinsel and mistletoe. Food, festivities, ugly sweaters and sappy seasonal movies. The rejoicing. Christ the Savior is born!

But the season can also be tough. Bittersweet. Memories of lost loved ones seem especially keen at this time of year. Especially when the loss is fresh.

I’ll let Mom fill you in:

GUEST POST: How to Quit Your Job and Travel

Author Katie Aune

By Katie R. Aune

When I quit my university fundraising job to travel for 13 months back in 2011, it was a pretty unheard-of thing to do for most Americans. While there are more resources today for those wishing to take a career break to travel, the idea of just quitting everything to travel the world can still feel daunting. Here are a few things to think about as you plan your escape:

  1. Determine your why. Why do you want to travel? Are you running away from something? Could you achieve some of your travel goals by instead taking a sabbatical or transitioning into a remote job that would allow you to work as you travel? I planned my trip as a complete break from work and as an opportunity to transition into a new, internationally focused career.
  2. Figure out your finances. Will you rely on savings? If so, do you need time to save more? I took about a year to save for my trip and focused hard on where I could cut costs, from eating out less to saving on cable bills to eliminating other subscriptions and expenses. Will you try to make money along the way, or do you need your savings to last your entire trip? Spend some time investigating the destinations you plan to visit and what your travel expenses may be.
  3. Address the not-so-fun logistics. If you own your home, plan to sell it or rent it out while you’re away. Arrange to put your belongings in storage or, better yet, sell as much as you can. Other things to think about: health insurance, travel insurance, what to do with your mail, how to handle communicating with loved ones back home, how to handle any ongoing bills and how to access money on the road.
  4. Prepare your out. Update your resume, especially with any accomplishments or data points that may be hard for you to access after you leave. Join LinkedIn if you haven’t already and start building your network. Ask trusted co-workers if they would serve as a reference for you upon your return. And when you do give notice, do it professionally and don’t burn bridges, no matter how unhappy you may be in your current role. Set yourself up as well as you can to find a new job when you eventually return.

Finally, plan, but don’t plan too much! Circling back to number one, have an idea of what you would like to accomplish by quitting your job to travel. Research destinations and make a list of “must-do” activities. But give yourself flexibility to change things up as you go along. Often the best experiences come from just going with the flow!

XMAS BOOK BASH #2: New Twist on Old Christmas Tale in ‘The Bishop’s Knight’

Deck the halls with steak and T-bone, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la!

What? Did I leave something out? That nice, juicy cheeseburger just sitting there on Mom’s plate? Well. Somebody had to eat it.  But I think Mom’s forgotten about that. So let’s not remind her, okay?

Anywho, we’re ramping up on our holiday spirit with another Christmas book-ish review. It’s called The Bishop’s Knight. It’s kinda unsual-ish. (New word I just made up.) I’ll let Her Royal Momness fill ya in:

The Bishop’s Knight: A Christmas Story

By Mark Ready, Indie Author (November 2023)

Pages: 84

Genre: Fantasy/Christmas

Note: We received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

You won’t find a miniature sleigh or eight tiny reindeer in Mark Ready’s fantasy novella, The Bishop’s Knight. But this nimble ‘Christmas story’ is a quick and compelling read.
