TEASER TUESDAY: ‘Black Ice’

Welcome to another edition of TEASER TUESDAY!

Mom and I decided we don’t like the usual rules for Teaser Tuesday. You’re supposed to “grab your current read, open to a random page” and “share “two teaser sentences from somewhere on that page that are spoiler free.”

Too restrictive, we decided. (Well, it was mostly me. But Mom helped. A little. You know how Moms are.)

Anyway, some books/plots just don’t lend themselves to “two sentences.” Sometimes a really compelling thought or plot element can be conveyed in three words. Sometimes it takes three or four or five sentences for same. Sometimes several brief, pithy sentences can fill the bill. But they have to be strung together in context to make sense.

So we’re making up our own rules today. Basically, we’re adding some flexibility regarding the number of sentences used to convey an idea or plot element. We’re keeping the rest.

Ready? Great! Let’s move on to today’s TT feature: Black Ice, by Brad Thor.

From p. 119:

First Sentences:

While Chinese investment had been mired by Norwegian politics, Chinese tourism has taken off like a rocket. Han fit right in. What’s more, the items he transported in his suitcase fit as well.

Second Sentences:

He had been pleased when Sarov had come up with the idea to send in the woman to retrieve his bags. Now that he had safely arrived in Kirkenes, he could focus on the completion of his assignment.

And from p. 289:

It took him a few minutes of moving things, but then Harvath found something. Crouching down, he flipped up the hasps, lifted the lid, and was about to peer inside, when a long shadow fell over him from behind.

About the Book:

Scot Harvath is having his best summer ever. With a cottage on the fjord, a boat, and his beautiful girlfriend Sølvi, he’s got everything he could possibly want. But out of vacation days and long overdue back home, America’s top spy has a decision to make—return, or submit his resignation.

When his deadly past comes calling, though, he’ll be left with no choice at all.

Leaving his favorite Oslo café, Harvath watches as a ghost climbs out of a taxi—a man he killed years ago, halfway around the world. How is he still alive? And what is he doing in Norway?

In a race against time that will take him high above the Arctic Circle, Harvath is tested in ways he has never imagined and pushed to a limit few human beings could ever endure.

If he succeeds, he’ll walk away with everything. If he fails, the United States and its allies will be at the mercy of one of the world’s most dangerous actors.

Would you read this book?

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Purple Princess of The Purple Booker.
