TTT: Books With THIS Award on the Cover

Don’t look now, but this week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Books With ___ on the Cover. (Pick a thing, a color, an item, a place, an animal, person, etc. and share books that have that thing on the cover.)

Children’s Literature has long been a favorite genre. So we’re highlighting Books With Newbery Medals on the Cover

100th Anniversary!

Besides. The first Newbery Medal was awarded in 1922. So This year, 2022, marks the award’s 100th anniversary.

What is a Newbery Medal, aka: a Newbery Award? Since 1922, the Newberry medal has been awarded annually by the American Library Association for “The most distinguished contribution to American literature for children”.” The Newbery Medal is the oldest and most prestigious children’s book award given in the United States. (For more info. About the Newbery Award, click here.  For a complete list of Newbery Medal winners, click here.)

It was really hard to narrow down our list to just a handful of awardees. But here, in no particular order, are some of our favorites. How many of these have you read?

  1. As soon as I saw the title of your post, I thought “It’s going to be the Newbery!” I’m glad I was right. I grew up knowing that medal meant a terrific book was inside the covers… not that I loved them all, but I could tell they were good even when they didn’t appeal to me personally. Of the books you posted here, I’ve read about half, and I have a few more on my list to read eventually.

    • Thanks for commenting! Newbery award winners of some of my all-time favorites, especially the *older* (ahem!) winners. I re-read Marguerite Henry’s “King of the Wind” again last summer – for the third or fourth time. Still as fresh and absorbing and delightful as it was the first time I read it – in the third grade. Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. 🙂 Happy TTT!

  2. I didn’t know that award began in 1922. They’ve discovered and promoted so many amazing books.

    • I actually had to look it up. Hard to believe the award is 100 years old. But I’m feeling a birthday party coming on…. 🙂

  3. So many good books on here!

  4. That’s an awesome and unique post topic for today! I had no idea the Newberry was 100 years old, so thanks for helping me learn something new today!

  5. What a great topic! There are some old favorites here, but seeing a Marguerite Henry book especially brings me back to my horse-obsessed youth!

  6. Wow, so many beautiful books. I love this choice for today’s topic!

  7. Nice! This is an awesome take on the prompt. I love children’s books, although I’ve only read half of these. Weird. I need to read more Newbery Award winners, apparently.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

  8. I’ve not read any Newberry Medal books, but then I grew up in the UK, so I largely read children’s books by UK authors, I only really started reading more US authors when I became a teenager.
