A new baby is exciting. But what if you’re the baby in the family? How will the imminent arrival of a younger brother or sister effect you?

While awaiting the arrival of a new brother or sister, young Benjamin plays a “baby package” game with his mom in this sweet and gentle story by Patricia Eckerman Ambas. Benjamin first pretends he’s a new package that has just arrived for mom. The package arrives in forms shapes and forms – a blanket, a basket, an imaginary box. But each package comes with an unspoken question: What about me when the new baby comes?  

Young Benjamin’s anxieties about a new baby are calmly and gently soothed and allayed in this sweet picture book brimming with love and understanding. It shows that  Mom’s heart won’t halved but doubled with the arrival of a new baby as big brother Benjamin and the new baby are both wrapped warmly in loads of love.

“I just keep hoping that one of these packages will have a sweet BIG boy in it,” whispers mom to Benjamin. Then she adds, “It will be fun to have a baby in our house. You are going to be such a great brother.” Mom gently helps Benjamin understand and anticipate his new role. Criiiict. Criiiict.

Then one day a package for Benjamin arrives. Mom quietly urges, “Go ahead. Open it.” He lifts a blanket and finds a “baby package”!

Then Benjamin wants to show Mom another package. He pulls her to the corner of the bassinet where baby is asleep. “I must be the luckiest Mommy in the world to have a baby AND a big boy!” says Mom. “I can’t wait to love you both forever.” Benjamin reaches out to touch the new baby and says, “I can’t wait to love you forever.”

This is such a sweet story. It’s reminiscent of Robert Munsch’s heartfelt classic, Love You Forever. Positive and uplifting, it will be a hit with young families and its target audience of children ages baby to ten years old. It would also make a great bedtime story for young children and those who love them.

About the Author

Patricia Eckerman Ambas loves sharing stories – everything is a story waiting to be told! Her interest in languages led her to become a teacher and she has been striving to instill her love for reading with youth for over fifteen years in that role.

As a mom of three, bedtime and really, anytime-stories fill her world. She also shares stories with her community in Oshkosh, WI as she showcases the stories of her husband’s family heritage while teaching guests at their family restaurant about Filipino food.

Displaying beautiful multicultural families in her books’ illustrations is at the forefront of her goals as an author in order to allow her own children, and others like them, a mirror of mixed families and a window for other children to see into a different lifestyle from their own.
